Last week Barclays appointed Michael Harte as Chief Operations and Technology Officer. The company announced that he will report to Group Chief Executive, Antony Jenkins. Harte will take the place of Shaygan Kheradpir, who recently joined IT industry leader, Juniper Networks as their new Chief Executive Officer. Barclays’ appointment of a new executive comes during a time of major transformation for the company’s technology with a focus on customer innovation, process automation, and digital services. Likely we will see big changes within the company in the next few months.
Focus on Innovation
Barclays is planning major innovation and Harte has proven that he has valuable experience in revamping banking systems, and is a major advocate of cloud computing for the banking industry.
“Given Michael’s wealth of experience, he is ideally placed to lead the transformation of the Barclays Operations and Technology function and its continued focus on customer innovation, digital services and process automation,” said Jenkins. “Technology is at the heart of our Transform agenda and will play a critical role in helping us achieve our goal of becoming the ‘Go-To’ bank.”
Banking Industry Expertise
Harte joins Barclays with a wealth of IT industry experience beginning with Commonwealth Bank where he was hired in 2006 as Group Executive of Enterprise IT. There he was responsible for retail and institutional banking systems. Harte was commended throughout the industry for leading a multi-year program to replace the legacy core banking system. Prior to Commonwealth Bank, Michael also held positions as Chief Information Officer for PNC Financial Services and as Vice President of Information Technology for Citigroup.
Harte earned his Master’s degree in Systems Management with distinction in 2001 from New York University. He also holds a Bachelor of Business Studies from Massey University and did Postgraduate Economics and Management studies at Victoria University in New Zealand.
International Financial Services Provider
With over 300 years of history and locations in over 50 countries with nearly 140,000 employees, Barclays is involved in personal banking, credit cards, corporate and investment banking and wealth management.
